From Laura and Iain Houston

Congratulations to Laura and Iain, they got married in 2020 and spent their honeymoon walking the West Highland Way.

Here’s their story, which they kindly submitted for our 40th anniversary celebrations. There are also Iain’s wonderful daily itinerary map illustrations.

We luckily got married in February this year, with our honeymoon set for South East Asia in March. Unfortunately this got cancelled two days before departure, however trying to look on the bright side we decided to have a home adventure in its place this year.

Having always wanted to walk the west highland way, the recent International travel restrictions had forced us to look closer to home for epic adventures. We decided to walk the West Highland Way this year in honour of Laura’s grandpa Fred who turned 91 on during our walk (Wednesday 23rd September), who has always had aspirations to do the walk but unfortunately never been able to.

Iain painted 6 maps for Fred, one for each day we are walking, so he can follow us on our daily adventure from his home in Portsmouth. At the end of each day we called Fred, so he can be part of the adventure too! He very much enjoyed our stories so far, and was specially fascinated about the distance we have walked (53miles in 3 days).
